Sermon by The Rev. Dr. Glenn Chestnutt, “Hope amid hopelessness”
In John’s Gospel Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well. He asks her for a drink of water and in the ensuing encounter gives her hope within the compromises, difficulties, and complexities of her life. We never find out her name, and we never know of any changes to her life circumstances. All we know is that this encounter with Jesus propels this woman to tell others about the offer she is given from him and of how Jesus recognizes her for who she really is. Like her, may we embrace the new life Jesus sets before us.
First Lesson: Romans 5: 1-11
Second Lesson: John 4: 5-42

In John’s Gospel Jesus heals a man blind from birth. This triggers an investigation by the religious authorities who are skeptical of this miracle. The story reminds us that we must look past our own issues and see both individuals and God in new ways.

Please join us for our Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2nd.
Light fades through magnificent stained glass windows; our candle-lit Communion table at the foot of the chancel steps; the rite of Communion and the centuries old custom of reading the Passion of our Lord in the four Gospels on this day; a candle extinguished at each reading; appropriate chorales from the gallery. As the last candle extinguished, we pause in darkness until the Christ candle is lit – the promise of Easter. In silence we leave the darkened sanctuary.
