Formal celebration of Holy Humour Sunday, also known as Bright Sunday or Risus Paschalis (the Easter laugh), dates back to the 15th Century although its theological origins are far older. The week following Easter Sunday, using joy and laughter, Christians celebrated Jesus’ victory over death. Humour and good-natured comedy have the power to disarm hostility and to transform tragedy into a manageable experience.
