May Vigil: Invitation to Montreal Choristers / Invitation aux choristes Montréalais·es
- le français suit -
The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul is pleased to invite Montreal-based choristers of all ages to attend and to participate in our May Vigil, The A&P Choir’s annual community fundraiser. Use this form to indicate your or your choir's interest in participating.
This concert focuses on repertoire that explores, advocates, and elevates gender and sexual diversity while raising funds to support 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations: the Montreal Trans Patient Union and GRIS Montreal.
The A&P Choir will sing a number of pieces by gender and sexually diverse composers, including Claude Vivier, Pax Ressler, Jennifer Higdon, Francis Poulenc, and two members of our Choir, Rebecca Gray and Patricia Yates. We are especially excited to sing the world premiere of the oratorio by Rebecca and Patricia, commissioned for the occasion.
You will then be invited to join us and many other choirs from Montreal to sing the last piece of the concert. We feel community is more important than ever for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and envision an event where as many voices as possible can join together in harmony for a choral rendition of Over the Rainbow to close our concert. We are looking to you and the power of our voices to make this year’s service extra special and to foster the hopeful message at the core of this famous song!
Participating choirs are asked to join The A&P Choir for a short combined rehearsal before the concert, from 6:00 to 6:45 pm on the evening of the event. The mass choir will be conducted by our very own Léa Moisan-Perrier.
The concert will take place on Thursday, May 28 at 7:30 PM at The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul (3415 Redpath St.).

The Organ
The organ of The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul was built in 1931 by the renowned Casavant Frères of Ste. Hyacinthe, as that firm's opus #1457. It is one of the largest instruments on the island of Montreal, containing nearly 7,000 pipes. About 70% of the pipes are located in the chancel; the other pipes speak from the rear gallery. Only the Trompette en chamade (installed in 1992) is visible, mounted prominently below the Black Watch window.
The instrument was cleaned and overhauled by Casavant in 1976-77, and several stops and a new console were added by Caron, Gagnon, Baumgarten in 1992. The tonal work of these rebuilds lent the instrument a neo-baroque flavour, but was unfortunately of uneven technical and musical quality. The console was rebuilt by Casavant in 2001. A gradual tonal renovation of the organ has been ongoing since 2010, whose goal is to replace the 1970s and 1990s-era neo-classical stops with pipework of the early 20th century, of superior material and tonal quality. Like all of the Casavant instruments built between ca. 1890 and 1960, op. 1457 was conceived in the late-Romantic Anglo-American style, and remains a monumental essay in the genre.
The tonal design of the instrument was conceived for the playing of orchestral transcriptions and orchestrally-inspired solo repertoire and accompaniments; the Wagnerian orchestra, with its kaleidoscopic yet seamless colour changes, was the aesthetic ideal for many organists of the period.
